BACKGROUND:
If you have watched Zootopia, the world of Beastars is pretty similar to it. It's a world of anthropomorphic animals with their many different rules, and the story tells us how a teenager grey wolf lives there. It's a slice-of-life with a touch of murder and violence, and social implications that exist by having herbivores and carnivores living together in the same society.
Legosi, the grey wolf and our main character, is a student at Cherryton School and he is a member of the drama club (a very exclusive and seriously important club, by the way), not as an actor but as part of the stage crew, specifically the lights. We get to meet members of the drama club, including red deer Louis, the lead actor who is rising to be the Beastart - Beastars are top students chosen as representative of a school and put into heroic status that transcends the fear and discrimination of the world. However everything gets very complicated when one of the members, the alpaca Tem, is killed by an unknown carnivore in the school premises. Tensions between herbivore and carnivore students start getting worse by the day, more than they were before, and Legosi is faced with these tensions, how they impact the lives of all the animals around him, and how they impact his own.
One night, when Legosi was standing guard to protect a secret training session for Louis, he saw a small dwarf bunny. This night was important for two reasons: for the first time in his life, Legosi touched a small herbivore animal, and that same night Legosi met his feral instincts. In a split second, Legosi grabbed the bunny girl and he had his first fight against his own instincts of wanting to eat her. While the bunny escaped, Legosi was left of feelings of guilt and confusion, as he had always been a gentle person and never thought about wanting to hurt anyone.
Naturally, he ended up meeting the bunny again, finding she was a year above his and she was part of the Gardening club. She also didn't seem to remember anything that happened that night, and Legosi's feelings towards what happened and towards her became a bit muddy - he started to like her. With no experience in romance, much less interacting with small herbivore animals, Legosi felt a bit like a child with his first crush, regardless of the many rumors that surrounded the bunny. Her name is Haru, by the way. And it took Legosi over 6 months to learn it.
Everything that follows are high school events of a life of a wolf. Fights, talks, learning from others, Legosi slowly grows as time changes. But the events of that night never go away, and whenever there is quiet he sees her once again: the white bunny that he almost ate. Reality creeps upon Legosi again and again, and one day when he goes to the city, he finds himself lost in the Back Alley Market - a place where many carnivores can find meat. Decided not to give in to his feral instincts, Legosiends up having a panic attack and the panda Ghouhin takes him in. This Panda is a psychotherapist of the area, who is trying to save those carnivores who gave in to their feral instincts, and whom he claims they have little to no chance of recovering; before he left the Panda's hospital there was a warning: "Your feelings are predatory instincts masked as romantic".
But that didn't stop Legosi. When he realized Haru and Louis had, in fact, a relationship of sorts going on, Legosi came forward with his own feelings, claiming for sure he was in love with her and he would try to protect her. Naturally being the way he was, this made it rather obvious to those around Legosi. Specially Haru herself who realized she absolutely could not let the wolf confess because, in the end, she did remember what happened to her that night and she knew who had attacked her.
After some events involving yakuza lions, Haru and Legosi finally talk about what happened. Despite their friendship remaining, the relationship didn't go much further as Haru herself displayed her own kind of instincts: her body feared the big bad wolf. They couldn't jump into things so easily and their relation had to be built much slower than that; plus, Haru clearly had her own issues that she had to overcome. Slowly, but surely, they grew though. But don't ask Legosi if they are dating. Honestly? He doesn't know for sure.
PERSONALITY:
Legosi is a weirdo. When he is first introduced in the manga, it was right after an herbivore named Tem was killed by a carnivore and by all means he acted so suspicious that naturally everyone thought he had been the one. He is very used to being suspected of doing something wrong due to what he is and how he looks: a large carnivore, too quiet, too weird - Legosi grew up knowing everyone would look at him and just see a scary big wolf who is too standoffish and doesn't get along with anyone. People can't read him and so people are scared of him. In this world, discrimination between herbivores and carnivores (even among themselves, often pressing on stereotypes like "bunnies are slut" or "goats eat all their papers") is common and often outspoken, and thus Legosi learned exactly what he is and how he is seen. Like he told Juno, he became so used to it that he no longer feels frustrated.
But while a weirdo and absolutely awkward, Legosi is, in fact, a very gentle soul and he is incredibly loyal - it's part of being a wolf. He is kind to bugs (loves them, in fact) and his quiet demeanor allows him to see things even if he is awkward when it comes to dealing with them. He enjoys quiet time, reading and tragedies. And those who get to hear him talk without restrains realize he always talks a bit like he's giving out a monologue. He is sensitive too, and loud noises might scare him and he is kind of afraid of bugs who will try to hurt him (wasps, wasps are very scary).
Those who get to know Legosi describe him as a kind, loyal, stubborn, thinks too much but is unable to get anything out without it sounding too air-head, is diligent and serious, protective and quiet. Ultimately like any 17 year old high schooler who is not popular in the least (he's only popular for the wrong reasons in the end). legosi doesn't like fighting either, and will often use his body language to steer off anyone who tries to fight him - he will bare his fangs, look positively menacing, and this will avoid a fight. Louis called it arrogance (since Legosi believes he is so scary that no one would fight him) however he also says it's reasonable; while Legosi clearly seems to know he is scary and menacing and can use that to keep his dominance, he uses it only so things don't escalate. If that doesn't work, though? Legosi is ready to lose, even if he can win. That's right, he will throw a coward or losing act, trying his best to avoid fighting others.
Until that fated night where he nearly attacked Haru. In a situation where he was tense and he didn't want to be found, he realized a small mammal was walking around and suddenly spotted him. Feral instincts overtook him the second the rabbit dashed away and in a split second he caught Haru. While he fought against the instinct to swallow the bunny whole, Legosi found himself in a situation he had never been before, and this will follow him until the end. Someone as kind as Legosi, the thought of even consuming one tiny animal is disgusting; he can't phantom ever doing it and he would not allow others near him to do the same, which is why he fought his friend Bill so seriously when he learned he was drinking animal blood. At some point, he was told that he is pushing his own ideals onto others and forcing them to accept those ideals, but can others blame him, when Legosi is fighting a constant internal battle about the fact that he too has feral instincts and he too nearly killed someone? At least it makes sense to legosi himself. And that was the time he decided he would fight: he would fight against such a thing, even fight others if he had to. That's his conviction.
Many would say it's all self-hatred. Carnivores are carnivores and Legosi forces himself to be a nobody, but it's not really self-hatred. All he wants is a simple quiet life, and he realized to have that is harder than expected. He doesn't want to be big and scary, he doesn't want to hurt others, all he wants is to stay quiet in his lane and live peacefully. When his instincts arose, though, it became harder, and then facing situations like Bill drinking animal blood, or ending up in a Black Market that sold meat everywhere just made things even harder for him to achieve that peaceful and kind life he hoped for.
Naturally things were even MORE complicated when Haru became his love interest. At the age of 17, Legosi never thought about romance or hoped for it. It never registered his mind and he his honestly very dense about it, not realizing Juno was actually in love with him and not realizing that he kept playing with her heart by giving her false hopes (not on purpose, but on his own dumb Legosi way. if he had known, of course he'd never do it, but Legosi absolutely knows nothing of romance or how females think). Look, to make this simple, he only learned Haru's actual name months after he met her; and after confessing, he never ONCE kissed her even though they are "kind of" boyfriend and girlfriend. Please realize you have a 17 year old virgin boy with zero experience on any of this right in front of you. But he could not stop thinking about Haru. What might have grown from predatory instincts quickly became love and an obsession - it's the right word, Legosi grew obsessed with her. He enjoys talking to her, he is constantly thinking about her, and guilt also follows along whenever he remembers what he did to her that night. He obsessively fights to keep her safe, like a loyal dog, and this went as far as him going into a Yakuza Lions den to save Haru from them when they kidnapped her. Though his love for her is so shy since he constantly needs to check himself and his instincts, it’s also very intense because Legosi is feeling all of it for the first time ever, coupled with the fact that he tried to eat this person he is now in love with.
Quite messy. But he promised he’d be better for her.
